The theme exhibition “Traces on Paper” is sponsored by Hermes, focusing on paper-based artworks. Although the paper is one of the most traditional, simplest and commonest media, it conveys the meaning of works. Artists utilize different artistic languages to express the ordinary significance. Also, paper, as the most sensitive carrier, reveals the artist’s joy, anger and sadness. Every stroke is a key to open the inmost world of the artist. Moreover, paper is the most intimate medium for artists and viewers, which can shorten their distance. The audience is able to feel the artist’s thoughts, dreams and soul through his or her brush strokes, like taking a journey into the very heart of the painter.
In addition to the theme exhibition, Fine Art Beijing will organize several special exhibitions, which offer visual feasts for collectors. A special exhibition “East Meets West” will be presented in cooperation with Guardian Auction, combined with masterpieces from returned overseas artists Xu Beihong, Liu Haisu and Lin Fengmian. The audience will appreciate Chinese water-ink painting influenced by Western painting techniques during the particular era. These works are the beginning of exploration in Chinese painting which starts to move toward the international market. Wang Shikuo is an important “red artist” in new China. His works are the landmark of new China’s art history due to dramatic effects, rich flavor composition and vivid characterization. A retrospective exhibition will be held, focusing on his sketches, with the help of his families and relevant academic institutes. He is the first person of new China to represent major historical themes with the use of sketches. The realistic approach has a unique artistic value. With the cooperation of Huang Zhou Foundation, Huang Zhou Retrospective Exhibition will be held to display this important water-ink painter in new China, which will reveal the philosophy of oriental aesthetics, the depth of humanities and the significance of reality. Huang Zhou has made great contributions to promote contemporary water-ink painting and carry out international cultural and artistic exchanges.
